Guys, in going to be playing guitar in our Church Choir soon, booth Electric and Acoustic. Could someone recommend a few amps for me to check out that would handle both well? The electric stuff will need to be both clean, and distorted rock type sound, and the acoustic, well - a nice acoustic sound would be fine. My budget is under 400.00 Its been a long time since I shopped for amps. My last rig consisted of two 4X12 Marshall cabinets and a 100 watt tube amp that went to 11!! - THEM DAYS ARE LONG GONE!! |

I use a fender Cyber-champ for just those occasions It has 14 presets from vintage Fender sounds to Marshall sounds. Also has 7 user presets for your own sound. It's 65 watts and has a 12 inch speaker.I got mine around $335. |

Lance, I have a Roland Jazz Chorus amp that I've had for years and played in church and think it is one of the best combos for acoustic and electric. I really like Roland amps because they are super clean, especially for acoustic, but you can always add a pedal if you need distortion. The JC120 has distortion, chorus, and reverb built in. (As a side note, Bobby Vinton borrowed my amp when he came to Cheyenne and loved it. I have no idea who Bobby Vinton is but my in-laws knew who he was). You should be able to find a nice Roland combo for your price range. Good Luck! John |

Lance, Before you spend that Mad money on an Amp, let me know which model you want. I have a friend here in Las Vegas who has been endorsed by The Guitar Center and Fender products. He can get almost anything for One-Half OFF!! That's 50% Off. We might be able to have you pick it up at your local "Guitar Center". I know I can save you a bundle. Just find out what you like with Model Numbers and let me know and I'll check into it. PS: Vox is making some great Amps right now! I believe Marshall bought them out and redesigned the entire line. Lance, I bought a Vox Valvetronix AD50VT 50W Guitar Combo about a year ago and love it. I think I paid around $360.00 I highly recommend it. |

Lance, most amps are not meant to do "double-duty" very well. The demands of an acoustic amp are quite different as compared to an electric amp, and it's hard to find an amp that will do a great job at both things. Sure, you can run your acoustic guitar through an amp that is really meant for an electric but you won't get a very good "acoustic" sound. Most of the reason is because the amp isn't designed to produce the frequency response you need to reproduce the acoustic "jangle". Acoustic amps have a wider frequency responce, and they almost all have high fidelity speaker systems that are not needed or used for electric guitars. So if you run your acoustic guitar out of an electric amp you may not be too pleased. There are always compromises when we try to run both kinds of guitars through a smaller stage set up. I do this same thing week after week with the trio I play with. I have tried lots of different ways of dealing with it. Here's what I do: I have a inexpensive Behringer amp that I bought for my electric, because I liked the sound, and it had lots of on-board effects with MIDI control. It has low power, so I can turn it up and run it at a level that will actually drive it. I don't like to get an amp with too much power for my application, then you can never turn it up past 1, and you get a weak tone. I can always run this amp at least halfway up. It's got a clean and a dirty channel, and a built-in tuner. It's got everything I needed and I can call up any sound or channel with a MIDI foot controller. That is the key for me, because I use the same foot controller to select between the amp and a signal processor that I have on stage which I use for my acoustic guitar and mandolin and run that directly into the PA system which can handle the acoustic instruments pretty well. That way the MIDI foot pedal controls all of my instruments. using the signal processor is one more piece of gear, but it sounds good for acoustic instruments and has lots of reverbs and sounds and those instruments just don't sound good through that guitar amp. One other simpler suggestion for you....if you have a direct box for your acoustic guitar, most of them have two outputs. Run one of them into the amp you are using for your electric guitar, and the other to the PA system. The amp can effectively be your monitor, and the PA can bring your acoustic guitar to the house. If you have a soundman, tell him to use the direct feed to the PA for your main acoustic guitar sound, and to take the electric from the amp. Are you playing an electric guitar that you made as well? I hope so! I don't notice too many electric guitar builders here. I enjoy building both types. |
